Accreditation: The Essential Element of E-Learning Institutions

Accreditation is important to a university and all the courses it is offering. Accreditation is the process of evaluating the institutions of higher learning for its high level of quality. Accreditation is typically a peer-review process. A group of experts in the field will attempt to assess the university's missions, its goals, objectives, resources, admission requirements, and support services, including the quality of its faculty and each of its courses. Choosing accredited online universities is of utmost importance to you as a student, especially if you are very serious about the degree you want to take.

In the United States, the government does not do the accreditation of schools and universities. Instead, it is conducted by private accrediting agencies. These agencies are composed of a pool of education professionals with the sole purpose of producing traditional and online accredited degree programs.

The importance of taking e-courses from an accredited school and program is insurmountable. If the course you are taking is accredited then you are positively ensuring that your degree will be recognized. Accredited online colleges can facilitate the transfer of credits earned to your other degree programs.

The accreditation process would also ensure that the amount and quality of education you will be receiving is of high quality, therefore the general public, and the entire educational community, can rightfully recognize your knowledge and abilities.

If the online school that you wanted to join is not accredited, most probably, it is not included in the list of State or Federal student's financial assistance programs. That means you won't be able to secure any loan to fund your education.

If accreditation is beneficial to the students, it is beneficial to the school as well. Accreditation tends to encourage schools and universities to improve on the quality of education that they are offering. It also makes these educational institutions accountable for the kind of education their students are getting. And more importantly, it provides the general public the confidence in their institution that they do produce good graduates.

To make sure that you are dealing with only accredited online universities, you have to look for these two major key points:

How to Spot an Accredited Online University

The school should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
One way to determine if your school is giving accredited online degrees is to check with this government agency. Check out from the U.S. Department of Education's website at http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml if the school is listed with them or not.
Check with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
The list of accredited schools is not only available with the U.S. Department of Education. To check the Council's list of accredited schools, go to their website at http://www.chea.org/
