Ideal Information on Online Education Technology

Certain software requirements must also be met in order to participate in online classes. For example, the computer will need an updated web browser.
It is likely that Internet access will be acquired through Internet Explorer, although Firefox has also served this need. Computers must also be maintained with antivirus software. This is vital, for online access can render computers susceptible to malicious viruses, Trojans, spy ware and malware. Antivirus software, such as that provided by Norton Antivirus or Symantec, is effective at keeping this problem at bay.

Computers must also be equipped with Microsoft Office or key components. The computers must have the ability to read, create, and save documents in Microsoft Word format. Microsoft Works, the home office version of this software can also cater to this need.

It is also expected that the computers will support the Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is also useful to acquire the full program, because then the user will be able to create protected format files (PDF files). Class software solutions mandate that students be able to install this software, and any other recommended applications, as required. After all, specific classes may have unique demands.

Classes may require a certain level of Internet connectivity. Instructors may refer to useful websites, or may even create websites to support classroom goals. At one time a 56k modem was more than adequate but today broadband DSL or cable modems are preferable to slower dial-up connections.

All aspects of online education technology require Internet access but not all Internet service providers are created equal. American Online Services are inappropriate. Oftentimes, proprietary services like AOL only offer browsers and email servers that may be incompatible with mainline applications. The company may also impose restrictions on the size of email that one can receive. Although email addresses may be assigned to students through the class, it is wise to establish an email account from a mainstream Internet service provider. As an alternative, students may obtain an email account from web-based providers of email accounts such as Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail. However, do keep in mind that the spam filters provided by those services may interfere with class materials. Another potential challenge is that it will be difficult to archive class materials and correspondence on these free email sites.

Online course software allows educators and learners to engage in new and exciting ways. With the appropriate e-learning technology, anyone can successfully participate in electronic learning. However, if students are unable to access modernized computer systems, they will face insurmountable difficulties with current online education software. Without the appropriate tools, the efficiency and potential of online classrooms will be greatly inhibited.
